Though extremely capable as a towing vehicle and able to venture off into the wilds, most Explorers spend their lives in an urban environment, used in much the same way station wagons used to be, prior to the SUV boom. The Toyota Sequoia is a seriously large SUV. It has a traditional body-on-frame design (from the new Toyota Tundra pickup) for extra strength and durability and features independent suspension all around. With its large 20-inch tires, the Toyota Sequoia looks like it has the off-road capability to tackle any terrain. The interior is huge and luxurious with a generous three-row seating system (2+2+3). Even with third row seats in place, cargo space is generous. The Toyota Sequoia is a striking and luxurious SUV, with beautiful 10-spoke polished aluminium wheels, running boards and tailgate spoiler. With a maximum towing capacity of 9000lbs and independent rear suspension, the Sequoia is one of the best towing vehicles on sale today. The 381 HP 5.7L V8 provides plenty of muscle and the six-speed automatic transmission has manual control. Fuel returns of 13mpg in the city and 18mpg on the highway are excellent for a vehicle this size. The direct competitors to the Sequoia are the Chevy Tahoe, GMC Yukon, and Ford Expedition. However, none of these vehicles can match the Toyota build quality and reliability which has been well proven over many years.
The Lincoln MKX FWD is based on a shared platform with the Ford Edge crossover SUV (which itself is based on a modified Mazda 6 platform), and bar a few cosmetic tweaks (such as the much talked about “egg-crate” grille), the Lincoln MKX FWD and the Ford Edge crossover SUV are the same vehicle under the skin. This is the main problem for the MKX, as the Ford Edge is considerably cheaper. Customers that choose the MKX over the Ford will essentially be paying $5000 extra for the Lincoln badge. According to Lincoln, the benchmark for this vehicle was the Lexus RX350, the best selling vehicle in the class. In some ways it beats the RX with more passenger space for instance (the MKX is longer and wider than the RX), however, the penalty for this extra space is 500lbs of extra weight. In terms of refinement, Lincoln boasts that the MKX is even quieter than the Lexus and road tests seem to confirm this. The MKX is a very refined cruiser, which, like the Lexus is designed to offer a smooth and comfortable ride. One area where the MKX cannot match the Lexus is in terms of perceived quality, the cabin could never be described as down market or cheap, however it simply is not in the same league as the Lexus. In summary the MKX is larger (and slower) than the Lexus, with similar economy and refinement, with a less inviting interior and lower perceived build quality. The MKX currently undercuts the Lexus by just $3000, for many this will not be enough to entice them away from the class leader with 10 years of superb reliability and customer satisfaction ratings.
The Infiniti FX is one of the new breed of crossover utility vehicles designed for consumers who want the best of both worlds, the responsive handling of a sedan, and the flexibility and utility of an SUV. The Infiniti FX35 comes closer than most to achieving those goals. It is a fast, responsive vehicle, but is capable of hauling five people plus their luggage for a camping/skiing/adventure trip. The Infiniti range of vehicles are renowned for coming fully loaded as standard, and the Infiniti FX does not disappoint, with a 300-watt Bose stereo, color rear-view monitor, advanced airbag system and pretty much everything else you can think of – options are not required.
